On the afternoon of April 28th local time, a sudden large-scale blackout of unknown cause struck southern Europe, cutting off power in multiple regions of Spain and Portugal. Public transportation and communication services were paralyzed.
The outage quickly spread across the Iberian Peninsula, temporarily affecting Andorra and areas of France bordering Spain. The majority of businesses were forced to close, leaving travelers stranded at railway stations. The blackout occurred without warning.
Prime Minister Sánchez stated that experts have yet to identify the cause behind the disappearance of 60% of the power supply. However, all potential factors are being analyzed, and no hypotheses or possibilities have been ruled out. There is currently no evidence suggesting a cyberattack.
The power grids of Spain and Portugal are highly integrated, connected to France through a limited number of cross-border interconnections, and thereby linked to other European countries.
Pay additional caution for those shipments to southern Europe recently.
